How house help killed my 3-month-old son – Senator Umeh

Sen. Umeh says the lives of employers of domestic staff should be protected as well as those of domestic workers.

Senator Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central) has lamented over how his 3-month-old son was killed by a domestic staff.

Senator Umeh disclosed this on Monday while speaking at a public hearing on a bill seeking an Act to provide for the domestication and documentation of domestic workers and employers in Nigeria.

The public hearing on the bill, sponsored by Senator Babangida Hussaini (APC, Jigawa north-west), was organized by the Senate Committee on Employment, labor, and Productivity chaired by Senator Diket Plang (APC, Plateau Central).

According to Umeh, the lives of the employers of domestic staff are at risk as well as those of the domestic workers themselves.

He then went down memory lane: “My second son who was 3 months old was killed by my domestic staff. It turned out the girl suffocated the baby. We didn’t know until she tried to kill my daughter. We heard a scream and that was when we found out.”

Speaking further, he said, “When we think that it is only the domestic staff that is abused, the employer is also at risk. We have to protect the employer as well.”
