Group backs out of planned nationwide protest

hails Tinubu on the birth of N/West, S/east Development Commission

A political pressure group known as Orji Uzor Kanu (OUK) Grassroots Movement of Nigeria has explained its position on the planned nationwide protest slated to take place in various cities across the 36 States of Nigeria and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja from August 1 to August 10, 2024, saying that members of the Movement across the country are not going to participate in the protest.

Rising from an emergency national meeting held at their national headquarters in Abuja the group told newsmen that their decision to back out of the protest is in line with the position of their principal and former Governor of Abia State Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. Senator Kalu who represents Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly had earlier appealed to the Youth to suspend the planned protest because the protest was not good for the country’s economy.

The Convener and national leader of the group Alhaji Muritala Mohammed alias ten who spoke on behalf of the group told newsmen that Senator Kalu’s position on the planned protest was okay by the members hence their decision to back out of the protest. According to him, the group held an emergency national meeting to look at the situation of things most particularly the planned nationwide protest and after much deliberation, they adopted the position of their principal that the protest was not good for the country’s economy and so they are not to be part of the protest.

Speaking in the same vein on behalf of the group Alhaji Ten who is also the Deputy National Chairman of the Heavy Duty Truck & Haulage Association of Nigeria hailed President Bola Ahmed for signing the North West Development Commission and Southeast Development Commission into law describing the two Commissions as a hugely welcome development capable to ameliorate the plight of the people in the two geopolitical zones.

While congratulating the good people of North go West and Southeast for the new development, he expressed the hope that the new Commissions will serve as viable platforms to give effective responses to the challenges of insecurity and economic hardship bedeviling the North West and Southeast geopolitical zones respectively calling on President Tinubu to ensure that credible people who are experienced enough are the ones to be appointed to head and manage the new Commissions.
