UNICAL suspends 19 students over alleged examination malpractices.

The University of Calabar (UniCal) has suspended 19 students for alleged examination misconduct, acting on recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

The suspension order is detailed in an official letter that has been signed by the Director of Administration, Citizen Ekpo, who holds a doctorate degree. This letter was issued on behalf of the Institution’s Registrar, Chukwuka Icha, who is also a distinguished doctorate holder. The document clearly outlines the terms of the suspension and carries the authoritative endorsement of these senior officials.

The official statement was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in the city of Calabar, providing important information to the public.

Speaking with NAN regarding the suspension, Effiong Eyo, who is the Head of the Public Relations Unit, explained that the letter was issued following the university’s Senate approval, which came after a thorough review and consideration of the committee’s detailed recommendations.

Eyo said that the affected students were suspended for one academic session covering the 2025/2026 session.

“The university has announced that the students are expected to resume their academic studies in the 2026/2027 academic session,” he explained.

Eyo noted that those affected were students from a diverse range of faculties, including Administration, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts, Education, Allied Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, and Environmental Sciences. These students represented various academic disciplines and departments across the university, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue among different fields of study.

Others, he explained, came from a diverse range of academic disciplines including Nursing Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, Science Laboratory Technology, Estate Management, Marketing, as well as several related departments within the institution.

He mentioned that the university administration had issued clear instructions to all deans, Heads of Departments (HODs), and all other relevant units within the institution to strictly enforce the suspension. They were also tasked with ensuring complete and unwavering compliance with the directive at every level of the university’s operations. (NAN).
